Members' tips: PTA fundraising ideas

PTA fundraising ideas

Over the course of the school year, there are only so many cheese and wine evenings any parent can cope with before weeping into their warm glass of Chardonnay. Try our members' tips for some inventive PTA fundraising ideas.

Pamper makes perfect

How about a pampering evening for the mums? My friend's children's school did this and it was a great success and brought in quite a bit of money. Manicures, pedicures, make-up and beauty, even massage if school has the space.

Because you're worth it

We have Indulgence Evenings a few times a year at our school. Mini Facials, Threading, Indian Head Massage, Back and Neck Massage, Nails, Henna Tattoos, Clairvoyants and stalls selling beauty products etc. Treatments are charged at £5.00 a time and the therapist gives a percentage to the school. It's surprising how many parents are qualified in these treatments.

Food and foam

Our child’s school hosts an International Evening. Everyone brings food from a different country. Try a murder mystery night. Those can be very popular and lots of fun. Getting the kids to do car washing is always good for a laugh, in the summer, assuming you have some kids who are tall enough to wash the roofs of the tallest cars!

How much am I bid?

We held an Auction of Promises. You get local/countrywide businesses to donate gifts or services (we had everything from helicopter rides to bags of compost) and auction them off to the highest bidder. The school band (rock & pop) played midway through the evening and a hotel provided food whilst a local celebrity did the auctioneering. Charged a ticket price of £10 for entry, welcome drink and food which covered hire of hall, welcome drinks, cutlery, band etc. Told everyone to bring their own bottles and had to apply for relevant licences etc to do so. It took heaps of organisation but it was a very popular event which brought in lots of money.

Kids stuff

My kids school does a lot of pupil based-things like:
1. Getting them to draw a picture, then having them framed and putting on an art gallery display where they sell the pictures to the parents (most parents will want to buy their child’s masterpiece)
2. Have some of the classes draw pictures of themselves and then print all the pictures on a tea towel with the school logo etc on it which you can then sell to the parents (we did this at Christmas so that parents could buy them as presents for grandparents etc)
3. Recipe books - collecting recipes from parents, relatives etc and the school produces a cook book with them to sell.
4. For pre-schoolers, you can have a Teddy Bear picnic where the children are sponsored for the walk to and from the picnic and the kids can wear fancy dress and bring their teddies. The walk doesn't have to be far could even be within the school grounds.
